about:

Since 1999, Iszoloscope has been pushing the abstract conceptualization of isolation and its induced altered states of consciousness into a powerful, ominous, and immersive world of dark sonic aesthetic that can be called its very own. Seamlessly bending stylistic constraints by creating a fusion of industrial, electro-acoustic, ambient, rhythmic noise, psy-trance and break-core; this artistic endeavor sets an exceptional standard in hybrid electronic music.

Establishing itself as an experimental music project in the late nineties on the radiophonic landscape of Ottawa, Canada; Iszoloscope quickly gathered momentum through weekly broadcasts and renditions at local alternative electronic music events. In 2001, Iszoloscope gained world-wide attention performing at the German underground music festival Maschinenfest and releasing its debut album, "Coagulating Wreckage", on Belgium's Spectre Records.

As of Today, Iszoloscope has remixed countless artists, appeared on dozens compilations, produced 4 more full length albums on the European labels Ant-Zen & Spectre ("Aquifère", "Au Seuil du Néant", "Les Gorges Des Limbes", and "The Audient Void") along with several EPs and collaborations on the labels YB-70, Ad Noiseam, and Spectre. Iszoloscope has also executed 5 successful European tours, and a myriad of shows at international events across the planet from Australia to Japan, to Europe and North America.

encyclopedia:

Iszoloscope
An isoloscope is a theoretical measuring device that would monitor the degree of isolation of a subject during a sensory deprivation experiment using a data-set from various physiological sources (heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, electroencephalography, etc).

As mentioned above, such a device does not exist; I decided to spell it with an "sz" mostly because I wanted to preserve a surreal quality to the name (in a French and English context). Its concept was imagined by Bénard and myself during a conversation about an online article we found, documenting John C Lilly's failure to secure government grants for his researches in sensory deprivation during the late 1960ies. The first reason enumerated was political. His association with the LSD counter-culture movement and the negative legal publicity that came with it was problematic for too many institutions*. Though, the article's focus was directed on how he lost his hold on academic credibility because of his gradual laxity in scientific rigor: as he took his experiments with LSD and isolation tanks further, he gradually turned them into introspective vision quests in altered states of consciousness (even though compelling and spiritually relevant, this is something hard to back up as scientific research). We couldn't help but notice that this whole issue might have been circumvented had he produced standardized data to document the experiment's aspect that touched human physiology under these unique conditions (even though, this not being his main interest). He needed a device that would've precisely monitored the whole experiment, covering as many aspects and phases as possible, displaying a very wide spectrum of data. An "isoloscope" of some sort. And so our project had a name! There was a certain poetry to it that I still like today. A harmonious mixture of our own imagination, the exploration of the farthest confines of the human psyche and the scientific discipline that grounds our understanding of the matter with the rest of the universe in its entirety.

    * I'd like to comment on the fact that subsequently, that same publicity helped him secure private funds to support all of his research projects (most notably on inter-species communication) for the rest of his career and until his death in 2001. Irony at its best.

Altered State of Consciousness (ASC)
    This non-spacial liminal threshold.
L'Arte dei Rumori (The Art of Noise)
This 1913 Futurist manifesto you might haven't heard of was arguably one of the most important and influential texts in 20th century musical aesthetics.
Cosmology
The study of the Universe in its totality, and by extension, humanity's place in it.
The Doors of Perception
1954 essay by Aldous Huxley intellectualizing and detailing his experiences with mescaline.
Electronic voice phenomena (EVP)
Popularized by Konstantin Raudive in 1971, EVPs are sections of static noise on a recording that are interpreted as voices (often believed to belong to ghosts or spirits). A tragically great example of apophenia in popular culture, still a very fascinating by its nature.
Fallacies
The whole "argument" experience dissected by Dr. Michael C. Labossiere. This is an absolute must of the internet experience!
The Ghost in the Machine (ostensible haunting frequency)
Research by the late Vic Tandy, lecturer at Coventry University, suggesting that subsonic frequencies are responsible for many ghost sightings. In my opinion, this is the most important, if not the only credible scientific discovery (I mean, actual real science) regarding this phenomena since Houdini's work debunking spiritualists in the 1920s.
Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics
The truly amazing world of scientific and philosophic possibilities brought forth by our understanding of quantum mechanics.
Isolation tank
One of Iszoloscope's original influences. Invented by John C. Lilly in 1954 in order to test the effects of sensory deprivation.
K Foundation
The elaborate continuation of the KLF's work after their "flamboyant" (reads "fuckyou") retirement from the music industry: Burning money, cryptic newspaper adds, K Foundation art award for "worst artist of the year" and various other acts of music industry sabotage... project on hold until 2013.
The Power of Myth
A book and six part television documentary of conversations between mythologist Joseph Campbell and journalist Bill Moyers. Uniquely inspiring and emancipating, one of my personal favorites of all time!
The Problem With Music
A milestone article by Steve Albini written in 1993 for "The Baffler", vol. 5 and reprinted in "Maximum RocknRoll" #133. This is dated but perfectly reflects how the music industry still operates and offers a great insight of why blaming every single problem that this industry faces on MP3s is just absurd!
Psychedelia
The creative exuberance of the mind liberated from its ostensibly ordinary fetters and the sea of new perspectives that immerses one self by inward optics.
The Psychedelic Experience
A book by Timothy Leary, Ralph Metzner and Richard Alpert documenting their interpretation of the parallels between the psychedelic experience and the Bardo Thodol.
Refus Global
An anti-establishment and anti-religious manifesto released on August 9, 1948 in Montreal. According to many historians, the original trigger of the social revolution that happened in Quebec in the 50ies and 60ies (the reason it is not a third world colony anymore). Thus, probably the only relevant counter-cultural document to come from this neck of the woods before it engulfed itself in the cognitive void of an homogenized popular culture.

encyclopedia // artistic currents:

Categorizing "sub-sub-genres" downstream from the post-indutrial and electronic music currents from the 80ies and 90ies is pretty much impossible and results are often ridiculous at best. With that in mind, here is my humble offer of some educated direction. A collection of Wikipedia articles enough people have agreed upon to be, in my opinion, culturally (or sub-culturally) relevant:

Breakcore

"Breakbeat-oriented sound that encourages speed, complexity, impact and maximum sonic density. It adheres to a loose set of stylistic rules." Iszoloscope is even mentioned in this article.
Dark Ambient Music
"[...] A subgenre of ambient music that features foreboding, ominous, or discordant overtones." Iszoloscope is also mentioned in this article.
Experimental Music

"is apt, providing it is understood not as descriptive of an act to be later judged in terms of success or failure, but simply as of an act the outcome of which is unknown (John Cage 1961, 13)" [...] "In a broader sense, it is also used to mean any music that challenges the commonly accepted notions of what music is."
Industrial music
This is the most complete and comprehensive definition I have found... oh and this one is not completely fallacious (in contrast to most ill informed posts on online forums and bizarre (reads "idiotic") articles I've come across over the last couple of years).
Musique concrète

"is a form of electroacoustic music that utilises acousmatic sound as a compositional resource. The compositional material is not restricted to the inclusion of sonorities derived from musical instruments or voices, nor to elements traditionally thought of as 'musical'".
Noise music

"is a term used to describe varieties of avant-garde music and sound art that may use elements such as cacophony, dissonance, atonality, noise, indeterminacy, and repetition in their realization. Noise music can feature distortion, various types of acoustically or electronically generated noise, randomly produced electronic signals, and non-traditional musical instruments. Noise music may also incorporate manipulated recordings, static, hiss and hum, feedback, live machine sounds, custom noise software, circuit bent instruments, and non-musical vocal elements that push noise towards the ecstatic."
Rhythmic Noise
"is a fusion genre among noise music and various styles of electronic dance music." Again, Iszoloscope is mentioned in this article.
